The Sussex Spaniel is an old breed which originates from the county of Sussex, England.  The Sussex Spaniel gained a reputation as an excellent companion and field dog during the 1800s.  The short legs, massive long body make it an ideal dog for penetrating the dense undergrowth and flushing game in the countryside of England.  The slow strong movement of the Sussex has not gained a strong following in the fields of the US where faster moving dogs are desired in the open countryside.  However, for those who have the opportunity to work with the Sussex spaniel, speed is never given a second thought!  This delightful spaniel is affectionate, even-tempered, true-blue, loyal worker and companion.  The Sussex Spaniel is a slow, but steady hunter and a congenial housedog.  His rich golden liver color is unique to the breed and despite his somber and serious expression, the breed is friendly and cheerful.

The Sussex Spaniel measures 13-15 inches at the withers (shoulders) and ranges between 35-45 pounds.  He is a rectangular dog appearing longer than tall.  Looking a bit like a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a torpedo, the Sussex Spaniel are long, low-build bird dogs of great strength and endurance.  The Sussex are an intelligent breed with long memories, thus they will never forget their families or rough handling.  The Sussex require socialization and lots of praise so he understands what is expected of him.  This is a breed that will worm their way into your heart and never let go!
